Tea is of the diaspora, ubiquitous and banal in the everyday life, but loaded with histories written and overwritten. Teh People are artists with an ear for the stories and moments old as the underground rivers that have traveled long journeys and make things grow wherever they are. Keep your ear open in 2019 if you care to listen; there are so many stories to tell.
Part of my desire to animate the word β€œteh” is my need to ask others for a hesitation born from unfamiliarity. Art that is insular and inward looking only affirms things we already believe to be true. Can I commit to always being challenged? Can I invite you to this contact zone with me? What does art look like in that place?
I can find no useful way to explain to the uninitiated how to pronounce β€œteh” in English, except to suggest landing your tongue somewhere between β€œt” and β€œd” and hope for the best. Teh People, in the same spirit, is interested in art as the meticulous effort of coaxing the tongue-tied into coherence.
